Thursday I drove south again, this time to Johnston, RI for a sneak peak and interview with soon to be opened Wicked Tulips. Wicked Tulips is a one of a kind, certified organic, pesticide free ‘Pick your own’ tulip farm. For a $1 per stem and a nominal entrance fee you can pick from a variety of tulips not usually sold in the US, or just peruse the gardens and local hiking trails for your leisure.
Everybody was happy at Wicked Tulips during my visit. The bees from the neighboring bee farm were thrilled to not have to battle pesticide laden pollen amongst the budding tulips. The locals that routinely drive and walk the area were excited to get picking that.very.day (nope, but you can Wednesday, April 27)! Even local The Animal Print Magazine was eager to partake in the tulip fun for an upcoming spread.
This is exactly what nature loving, New Englander Keriann and her dutch, tulip-heir husband Jeroen envisioned last fall when they leased land from NRICD and planted over 250,000 tulip bulbs (they’ve also done this for 6 years previously in VA.)
In full force you-build-it-and-they-will-come mode, Wicked Tulips and its change maker farmers not only offer organic and pesticide free tulips for you to pick but also tulip bulbs for you to order from their site EcoTulips.com.
Bring the kids (not the dog though), your neighbors and a bucket and spend a day ensconced in beauty. You will leave with an armful of tulips and a smile on your face from a natural high.
I’m back home now and am wearing my mixologist hat in an attempt to create a tulip martini. Keriann inspired me to do this very thing after we ate a tulip petal together on her tulip farm standing between rows of her tulips. #Tulips #TulipsAreAwesome #TulipsAreAlsoEdible
Cheers and Enjoy,
